Minnesota Speaker of the House Lisa Demuth has won the Republican nomination for governor over Trump-backed Mike Lindell. The Associated Press called the race for Demuth at 11:27 p.m. at which time she led with 45.1% of the vote to Lindell’s 31.0%, with 69% of precincts reporting.
Nearly every poll before the election showed Lindell ahead, but only by single digits. His national profile and support from President Donald Trump was expected to bolster his electoral odds.
Demuth will go on to face Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who did not face a significant primary challenge.
A prominent figure in grassroots conservative circles, Lindell previously achieved recognition with his pillow brand, but later became a proponent of Trump’s 2020 election fraud claims and also mounted a bid to lead the Republican National Committee.
The race is a blow to Trump’s endorsement record.
