Alon Haimovich, the general manager of Microsoft Israel, will leave the company following an internal inquiry that examined whether Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform was used by Israeli military intelligence Unit 8200 for mass surveillance of Palestinian phone calls.
The recently concluded inquiry – launched last year after an investigation by The Guardian – and its findings prompted Haimovich’s departure, according to sources familiar with the matter. Microsoft terminated Unit 8200’s access to Azure after concluding that the unit had violated the company’s terms of service, which prohibit the use of its technology to facilitate mass surveillance.
