Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Saturday that she will attend Sunday’s World Cup final in New Jersey after an invitation from President Trump. The presumption is they will sit together. And if they do, the meeting would mark their first since December, following months of verbal sparring, according to CBS News.
Sheinbaum in making the announcement on X also said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend.
“I considered it politically important that the three countries hosting the World Cup are involved, and it is also a sign of the strong coordination and collaboration we have with the U.S. government,” Sheinbaum said.
The presence of Sheinbaum and Carney at the match, in which Argentina will play Spain, comes amidst tense trade negotiations, as Mexico and Canada try to convince Trump to extend the trilateral North American trade agreement, according to Reuters.
