Maryland Democrats begin redistricting special session

Maryland Democrats on Monday began a special session to redraw its congressional district maps, marking the latest state to move toward a redraw mid-decade.Maryland currently has only one Republican member of Congress and a redraw is expected to eliminate that district, Politico reported. Notably, no redrawn map from this session would take effect before the 2028 elections, meaning Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., is likely safe for the short-term.
The session is likely to address a constitutional amendment that would allow a redrawn map to survive judicial scrutiny. That move comes after the state Supreme Court previously struck down a map in 2022 and the Virginia Supreme Court blocked a redraw earlier this year.
At President Donald Trump’s urging, many Republican-led states redrew their congressional maps to favor Republicans for the midterms, prompting several Democratic states to attempt to fight back, though only California managed to impose its revised slates in time for the midterms.
