Television personality Martha Setwart formally apologized in a statement on social media following an intense backlash for dressing as a homeless person on Halloween. The homemaking icon posted a photo of herself in the costume, which included torn clothing and a stocking cap with her holding a handwritten cardboard sign that read, “I am hungry. Help me!!”
The post was quickly deleted when it received extensive criticism.
“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” Stewart wrote Sunday on Instagram.
“My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry,” Stewart wrote.
The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul had previously released a statement to Page Six stating that she was “distressed” by the backlash. Her costume, she said, was “intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness.”
