Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kans., this week said that President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel a planned rally in Kansas this weekend was the result of his strong polling performance.Marshall is facing an unexpectedly close race for reelection in a typically red state. His contest against Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton is set for Tuesday.
Trump abruptly canceled a rally with Marshall in favor of virtual events, which Marshall told reporters was because “I think that I’m doing so well in the polls that he’s got, probably got better places to spend his time.”
The party of the president typically loses ground during the midterms, but Trump has sought to defy historical trends and retain control of both chambers. Polling, however, appears skeptical of that prospect.
