The Louisiana Senate on Thursday approved a redrawn slate of the state’s congressional district maps after the Supreme Court struck down race-based districts. The 27-10 vote sent the legislation to the state House, where it is expected to pass.
The redraw is expected to produce five Republican-leaning districts and one Democratic-leaning seat, giving Republicans a net gain of one in the battle for the House in November.
Louisiana’s maps were the subject of legal scrutiny, which led to a recent Supreme Court case in which the justices narrowed Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and disallowed race-based districts.
The ruling triggered a wave of redraws across the South, which is expected to benefit Republicans in the midterms.
