Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi has become the leading scorer in men and women’s World Cup history. The 38-year-old broke previous records by scoring his team’s only two goals in a 2-0 victory Monday over Australia. He has also scored all five of his country’s goals so far in its 2026 FIFA campaign.
Scoring in his sixth consecutive World Cup game Monday, Messi added his 18th career goal, overtaking Brazil’s Marta Vieira da Silva’s previous record of 17.
The victory secured Argentina’s advancement to the knockout stage with hopes of becoming the third nation to ever win back-to-back World Cups. In their last group stage game, Argentina will face Jordan in Arlington, Texas, Saturday night.
