The Justice Department will send over 1,000 election monitors to observe polls nationwide on Tuesday and ensure people are following federal law when voting in the midterms. The department is sending a record number of poll monitors to polling locations in all 50 states, who are directed to “only observe and take notes.” Poll monitors are not allowed to intimidate voters or push voters to vote for specific candidates.
Deploying poll monitors is not unusual and has been done under presidential administrations in both parties. But the number this year is unusual, after previous years saw 289 monitors deployed in the 2022 midterms, and 714 in the 2024 presidential election, according to NBC News. Monitors also generally go to areas with a history of discrimination.
A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed that all poll monitors will comply with local law.
“All monitors must meet the same legal and ethical requirements, including that they not interfere with the voting process,” the spokesperson said. “Every monitor has the same role: observe for potential violations of federal law and report concerns to the Department, which the Department will review after Election Day and act where appropriate.”
