The Department of Justice said Thursday it has charged a fourth foreign national in Nevada with voting illegally in a federal election in its latest crackdown ahead of next week’s midterm elections. The department charged Democratic Republic of Congo national Mlebinge Riziki Ramadhani, who is in the United States legally as a permanent resident but is not an American citizen, with one count of voting by an alien for voting in 2022.
“The law is clear: every eligible citizen has the right to vote, and no one has the right to corrupt that process through fraudulent means,” Sigal Chattah, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada, said in a statement. “Any attempt to undermine our elections through criminal conduct will meet swift and decisive accountability.
“The District of Nevada is committed to protecting the sanctity of the ballot box, and we will not tolerate any actions that threaten the fairness of our democratic system,” she added.
An initial court appearance for Ramadhani has not been scheduled so far, but the maximum statutory penalty for the crime is one year of imprisonment, a fine of up to $100,000, or both.
