Judge sentences Harvey Weinstein to 15 years in prison in New York sexual assault case

A New York judge on Wednesday sentenced former Hollywood movie producer Harvey Weinstein to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a production assistant in 2006.Weinstein was convicted last year of sexually assaulting former Project Runway production assistant Miriam Haley at his Manhattan apartment. He was previously convicted of the sexual assault in 2020 but it was overturned in 2024, prompting a new trial.
Haley and Weinstein both spoke in a court in Lower Manhattan during the sentencing, where Haley reflected on the lasting impact of the crime, along with the backlash of the trial.
“Your Honor, I appreciate this opportunity to speak,” she said. “Having been sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away. Making the decision to speak up will have me looking over my shoulder for years to come. It’s a life sentence for me.”
Weinstein told the court that he regrets a lot of his actions and has apologized to some of his accusers and victims, though he has never legally acknowledged his crimes. He admitted that he does have regrets when it comes to Haley.
“Reflecting on all that has happened since 2017 has helped me recognize how my past conduct has negatively affected others,” he said. “I live with many regrets and sincerely apologize to anyone I have affected with my actions.”
Judge Curtis Farber labeled Weinstein as the face of the #MeToo movement and described him as once a king in the movie industry, “but recognition for these achievements will pale in comparison to what you did.”
The judge said Weinstein treated women as “mere objects to be played with and discarded” and has still failed to accept responsibility for his actions, portraying himself as a victim during jailhouse interviews, according to the Associated Press.
The sentencing comes after Weinstein’s defense played up the former Hollywood mogul’s health issues and age in asking for a softer sentence. The defense asked for nine years, while prosecutors asked for 20 years in prison.
