JPMorgan says Bitcoin may outperform stocks, bonds and gold – but still warns of “speculative” risk
JPMorgan Chase’s asset management division, in a notable departure from CEO Jamie Dimon’s long-held skepticism, has acknowledged in its 2027 “Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions” report that Bitcoin could outperform most major asset classes like equities, bonds and gold over the next decade.
Despite the positive forecast, the bank stops short of recommending Bitcoin for strategic investors, citing its high volatility and unstable correlations to other asset classes, which prevent it from serving as a reliable portfolio diversifier.
The report contrasts sharply with Dimon’s personal criticism of Bitcoin as a “fraud” and “Ponzi scheme,” though JPMorgan has still utilized blockchain technology and analyzed Bitcoin’s potential, highlighting the ongoing tension between the CEO’s public remarks and the bank’s analytical findings.
The report notes that while Bitcoin’s price volatility has declined, it remains a significant hurdle for institutional investors, describing Bitcoin as a “high beta risk asset” that lacks the stability of gold or technology stocks within traditional asset allocation frameworks.
JPMorgan’s position recognizes Bitcoin’s potential for significant returns but advises caution, suggesting Bitcoin may eventually mature into a legitimate portfolio component if regulation clarifies and volatility and correlations continue to improve.
