    Two days after Texas voters handed him a 28-point defeat, Sen. John Cornyn turned to the Bible, Winston Churchill, and a fable about a self-destructive scorpion to process the end of his Senate career. The posts on X read less like a concession and more like a man searching for meaning, or assigning blame, after one of the most lopsided primary losses an incumbent Republican senator has suffered in modern memory.

    Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general who carried President Trump’s endorsement into the runoff, defeated Cornyn 62.5% to 37.5% with roughly half of precincts reporting on election night. The margin only widened from there. What had once looked like a competitive intra-party contest became a rout after Trump weighed in during the final stretch of early voting.
