Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon this week dismissed talk of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he enters the city, saying it was merely a political talking point.Mamdani has openly floated arresting Netanyahu, who is currently subject to an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court. The U.S. is not a party to the Rome Statute and has no obligation to arrest him. President Donald Trump has insisted that Netanyahu will not face arrest in the United States.
Speaking to NewsNation, Danon brushed off the prospect, saying “[w]e all know it’s a stunt, you know, and no basis to these remarks of the mayor.”
“The U.S. is not part of the ICC so there is no warrant against a prime minister in the U.S., and there is no jurisdiction for the mayor,” he added.
The ICC warrant stems from the Gaza conflict and allegations of an Israeli-orchestrated genocide of Palestinians in the region, which Israel adamantly denies.
