Iranian hackers target US industrial systems in attempt to disrupt American infrastructure

Multiple federal agencies warned Tuesday that Iranian hackers are hacking into American industrial control systems in an attempt to disrupt U.S. infrastructure. The alert comes as President Donald Trump warns Iran the U.S. could wipe out its civilization Tuesday night if the country does not agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 8 p.m. Eastern. Trump has also threatened to attack Iran’s power plants and bridges.  
The joint alert, which was issued by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, FBI, NSA, Department of Energy and U.S. Cyber Command, did not specify what companies have been infiltrated or how severe the disruptions have been but said they are compromising internet-facing tools made by Rockwell Automation. 
The hackers have targeted victims in government services, water and wastewater services and the energy sector, the alert said.
“The authoring agencies assess a group of Iranian-affiliated advanced persistent threat actors is conducting this activity to cause disruptive effects within the United States,” the agencies said. “If owners and operators discover an affected internet-accessible device in their environment, additional technical measures may be necessary to evaluate the risk of compromise.”
The agencies directed potential victims to contact them or applicable vendors if they suspect their devices have been compromised. 
The agencies did not specify what hacking group the hackers were part of, but the attacks have resulted in operational disruption and financial loss.
