Vice President JD Vance was ready to fly. His staff had gathered at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington. Journalists were standing by. Then the trip was called off, abruptly and without a firm reschedule date, after Iranian officials refused to travel to Switzerland for the first round of technical nuclear talks under a freshly signed agreement between Washington and Tehran.
The reason, as the Associated Press reported, was Iran’s insistence that Israeli strikes on Hezbollah militants in Lebanon must stop before any face-to-face negotiations could begin. Three regional officials and a person familiar with the matter confirmed that condition to the AP. The White House offered a different explanation, or at least a vaguer one, saying only that “the logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable.”
