    India Proposes Stricter VPN Regulations Requiring Local Offices, Compliance Officers

    India is planning to introduce a legal framework that would require virtual private network (VPN) providers to set up local offices and appoint compliance officers to address government concerns, according to reports. Prison terms for local officials of VPN service providers who fail to comply with the directives are under consideration, officials said. The development follows a failed 2022 data retention mandate that led major VPN providers to move physical servers out of India.
