SANTIAGO, Chile (CN) — September 11 seemed like any other day in Santiago, the Chilean capital compressed between mountains, as the hours passed, marking another anniversary of the 1973 coup and the morning when Salvador Allende, the country’s then-president, died inside the government palace and the military took over.
Fifty-three years later, for the first time since democracy returned in the 1990s, the government canceled its official remembrance event as part of a symbolic sweep by José Antonio Kast, the conservative president who took office in March.
