The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Friday announced that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) had arrested an Indian national for allegedly voting illegally in the 2024 election.Mukeshkumar Somabhai Chaudhari faces one count of false information in voting and one count of making a false claim of citizenship to register to vote. He faces a maximum of five years in prison.
“Voting is reserved for U.S. citizens, and falsely claiming citizenship to cast a ballot is a serious crime,” HSI St. Paul Special Agent in Charge Travis Pickard said in a statement. “HSI has the experience and authority to investigate these cases, and we take that responsibility seriously. We will continue working with our law enforcement partners to protect the integrity of our election systems.”
Pickard’s comments come as the Trump administration mounts a crackdown on alleged illegal voting. On Thursday, for example, the Department of Justice sued the state of California for alleged “state-facilitated voter fraud” after identifying roughly 20,000 likely noncitizens on the state voter rolls.
“Our message to aliens who vote in American elections is clear: we will find you, arrest you, and you will face the consequences, including criminal charges and deportation,” DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said. “Under President Trump’s leadership, this administration will never allow the votes of American citizens to be cancelled out by non-citizens illegally voting in our elections. Only American citizens should be electing American leaders.”
Choudhari allegedly voted illegally in Minnesota, a Democratic-leaning state that has been in federal crosshairs recently over revelations of large-scale public fraud, primarily linked to the state’s Somali ex-pat community.
