Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained relatives who come forward to sponsor unaccompanied migrant children held in federal shelters, according to records obtained by the Texas Tribune.
The practice involves the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) under the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families sharing sponsor information with ICE, leading to arrests of potential caregivers. At least 100 such detentions had been reported as of March, an NPR affiliate told the Tribune.
