    Hungary Prosecutor General Rules Seizure of Fidesz Servers Unlawful

    Hungary’s Prosecutor General’s Office said this week that a police seizure of Fidesz party servers last month was carried out unlawfully, according to a statement from the office. The office said the order for the raid was valid, but the execution “amounted to a fishing expedition” because investigators confiscated all communications systems and databases rather than targeted evidence. “This approach constitutes an unlawful practice under both EU and Hungarian law,” the statement read.

    Fidesz, the party of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, described the action as an “unprecedented” overreach unseen in Hungary since the fall of Communism in 1989 and said it was part of a political revenge campaign by the government of Prime Minister Peter Magyar. The case has raised questions about the limits of state power; constitutional systems commonly include safeguards such as “prohibitions against torture and the deprivation of liberty, except according to law” and “equality before the law” [1].
