The AI Doom Narrative Is a Distraction
I have watched the same playbook deployed too many times to count. Every few years, a terrifying new bogeyman is rolled out to keep the public in a state of perpetual fear, and right now that bogeyman is artificial intelligence. The loudest voices in the AI-doom conversation — the same corporate labs that are building the technology — are warning us that a machine might wake up and decide to kill us all. I do not buy it. In my view, that narrative is being used to distract us from the human-run systems that are already harming people every single day.
