Ayatollah Khamenei knew he was a target — Israel’s most important — and he took great care not to let his movements be known. He had several places where he believed himself to be secure, including some hideouts built deep underground, under apartment blocks, and of course in his enormous compound in the middle of Tehran. He varied his movements , moving from meetings in one place to meetings in another, and varied, too, the places where he slept.
