    House votes to eliminate pennies permanently in US currency

    The House voted unanimously Monday to pass the bipartisan Common Cents Act, which will stop the Treasury from minting any more pennies. Additionally, the bill would set up a framework for cash transactions to be rounded to the nearest five cents. Cash wages would be rounded up if the total is not divisible by 5 cents, Fox News reported. 
    The U.S. Mint stopped producing pennies in November 2025 after they were in circulation for 232 years. The act, if passed, would ensure a future administration doesn’t reverse the decision. 
    The cost of minting pennies has risen in recent years, and they now cost three times their value to produce as of 2025. The Treasury estimates the immediate annual savings of the bill, if passed, would be $56 million.
