The text for a bill that would extend a key provision in the government’s spying authority is reportedly circulating in the House. Both the House and Senate voted to extend the controversial Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act earlier this month, and it’s due to expire on April 30. The deadline for a formal proposal to be considered in the House Rules Committee on Monday and a floor vote later this week is noon on Thursday.

Section 702 permits the warrantless surveillance of foreigners abroad and has drawn scrutiny over the potential to sweep up information on Americans in the process.
House Republicans who oppose the clean extension want to impose new warrant requirements for Section 702 surveillance to curtail possible abuses against American citizens. Before being reelected president for a second term, Trump criticized FISA for facilitating the abuses of the baseless Russia collusion investigation into his 2016 campaign.
