An adjudicatory subcommittee of the House Ethics Committee will decide Tuesday what, if any, penalties it should recommend be imposed on Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla. In March, the committee concluded that alleged campaign finance violations against Cherfilus-McCormick were “proven by clear and convincing evidence.”
In November, the Justice Department charged Cherfilus-McCormick with stealing $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds, which she then used for her campaign. Cherfilus-McCormick pleaded not guilty to 15 counts, according to CBS News, and she had denied any wrongdoing.
The committee could recommend expulsion, censure, fines or other reprimands. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., awaits the completion of the committee’s work before forcing a floor vote on Cherfilus-McCormick’s expulsion.
