Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, an Oregon Democrat and senior member of the Education Committee, introduced articles of impeachment against Education Secretary Linda McMahon on the House floor Thursday, accusing her of dismantling the Department of Education without congressional approval and lying to lawmakers under oath.
The resolution, backed by more than a dozen Democratic co-sponsors, alleges McMahon committed “high crimes and misdemeanors” through what Bonamici called a “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law.” The charges center on McMahon’s ongoing effort to transfer Education Department functions to the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice, moves Bonamici says Congress never authorized.
