A House committee voted 33 to 26 on Wednesday to strip funding from a Biden-era mandate that would require automakers to install technology capable of monitoring drivers and disabling their vehicles, a provision conservatives have branded a government “kill switch” and civil-liberties threat hiding inside a drunk-driving safety law.
The amendment, offered by Rep. Michael Cloud (R-TX), Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-UT), and Rep. Marie Glusenkamp Perez (D-WA), would end federal funding for implementation of the mandate. Its passage drew immediate praise from House Freedom Caucus members, who cast the vote as a win for constitutional liberty and a check on federal surveillance overreach.
