    Higher-Protein Breakfast Linked to Steadier Blood Sugar in Carriers of Common Diabetes Risk Gene

    A study of 54 adults found that replacing a carbohydrate-heavy breakfast with a higher-protein version reduced post-meal blood sugar spikes, according to a report by mindbodygreen published Aug. 1, 2026. The findings appeared in a Nature journal, and the effect was reported among all participants, the report stated. For those carrying two copies of the common MTNR1B gene variant associated with Type 2 diabetes risk, genotype-related differences in blood sugar response disappeared after the higher-protein meal, according to the report. The study did not assess long-term health outcomes, the report stated.
