HelloFresh is facing mixed reactions over a Pride Month social media statement: some call it inappropriate and insensitive, while others applaud the company for LGBTQ-themed humor.“We know eating isn’t always a top priority this month. We respect that. But for those of you who are … prepping … we have an extensive lineup of high-fiber recipes available. Happy Pride,” the statement, posted on June 5, says.
HelloFresh is a multinational meal kit company that delivers portioned ingredients and recipes to customers’ homes.
The Instagram post brought both positive and negative reactions, garnering more than 104,000 likes and around 5,100 comments as of Sunday. One critic, conservative social media activist Robby Starbuck, said in a social media post that it was “one of the most disturbing marketing campaigns” and that the company is encouraging people to prepare their colon for “receiving anal sex during Pride Month.”
“No sane person should use this insane company,” Starbuck continued.
Some criticized the opening line for its insensitivity towards people dealing with eating disorders. Others commented they were canceling subscriptions, that it “wouldn’t work out the way you hoped” and “Bud light hold my beer … 📉” — a reference to Bud Light’s April 2023 controversy with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
That backlash resulted in a boycott from conservative-minded customers, costing the brewer an estimated $1 billion-plus in lost sales.
However, some users reacted positively to the recent HelloFresh campaign.
“I wHOLE heartedly thank you for your support & service,” one person commented.
Another commended the brand for trusting its marketing team and one applauded HelloFresh for having the “balls to stand up for the LGBTQ community.”
The app Grindr – which brands itself as the world’s largest dating and social networking app for bi, gay, trans and queer people – also chimed in, simply commenting “right” on the initial post.
HelloFresh has faced controversy in the past, specifically concerning an ongoing 2024 Labor Department investigation over allegations that migrant children were working at one of the company’s cooking and packaging facilities in Illinois.
HelloFresh claimed that a third-party agency it had a contract with was responsible for hiring the children, and once the issue was revealed, HelloFresh ended the contract and said it has a zero-tolerance policy against child labor.
