Seven people were killed and 40 others wounded when gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in southern Jordan on Friday, according to authorities. The attack occurred in Karak, which is about 90 kilometers south of Amman, Jordan’s capital.
Footage aired on Jordanian state television appeared to show two men carrying handguns approaching the church and firing.
A third man, apparently armed with a semiautomatic rifle, then joined them. The men subsequently moved toward the church, reports said.
Images recorded at the scene showed shattered glass and blood on the church floor.
Dirgham Halasa, who was attending the funeral, said gunfire erupted about 15 minutes after the service began, prompting people to flee. Although he did not see the attackers himself, he said other witnesses reported seeing four men.
Authorities had not confirmed how many assailants were involved.
