Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, on Wednesday fumed over the New York Times’s coverage of recently declassified documents about Chinese election meddling, which he deemed “misleading.”In remarks on the Senate floor, Grassley took exception to two articles, written by Devlin Barrett and Charlie Savage, from the outlet. Barrett’s addressed an “Albany memo” and asserted that Grassley had pointed to it as evidence of an FBI cover up.
“That is not what I said when I made those records public. That’s what the FBI said six years ago,” he said. He further highlighted that the “Albany memo” was an FBI document and not a product of his office.
The Savage article, included a passage in which it highlighted that Grassley had obtained a litany of documents that would not normally be public, without explaining how he had done so.
“The New York Times seems to be very obsessed with how I’ve obtained government records. Maybe because they haven’t been able to, or maybe they haven’t even tried to get these records?” he added.
He then indicated that he kept his sources private to protect whistleblowers.
