Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said Friday she’ll vote against Todd Blanche for attorney general, slimming the margins for his confirmation. Murkowski joins Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, in opposing Trump’s pick for the job. With Sen. Murkowski said the job needs to go to an Attorney General who will “check the worst impulses of the administration,” and she doesn’t think Blanche would do that. She said she is also concerned about the weaponization of the Justice Department, which she said has become more frequent under the Trump administration.
She pointed to the Justice Department’s handling of the release of the files associated with the investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. She also doubted the $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” won’t be revived at some point, despite Blanche’s assurances it’s dead.
