GOP revising $1B in security additions for White House, ballroom after Senate parliamentarian ruling

Senate Republicans hit a setback in their effort to include $1 billion for new White House security upgrades and President Donald Trump’s planned ballroom in a broader immigration funding package after the Senate parliamentarian ruled the proposal violates procedural rules.The funding in question would have covered security enhancements tied to the president’s new ballroom project, as well as other White House upgrades, including a visitor screening facility, expanded Secret Service training and added protections for major events, the Associated Press reported.
Republicans said Saturday night that they are in the process of revising the legislation to comply with the parliamentarian’s guidance, though it remains uncertain whether any portion of the proposed Secret Service funding can still be preserved in the bill.According to Senate Democrats, the parliamentarian determined late Saturday that a project as sweeping as Trump’s proposed East Wing expansion could not be folded into the narrowly tailored GOP budget bill, which Republicans are attempting to pass through the reconciliation process with a simple majority vote.
