The National Republican Senatorial Committee filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Monday concerning a Republican Senate candidate in Alaska who shares the name as the incumbent. According to the complaint, Daniel J. Sullivan from Petersburg, Alaska, filed a declaration of candidacy to run as a Republican for the Alaskan Senate seat currently held by Republican incumbent, Sen. Dan Sulivan.
Daniel J. Sullivan had no prior history of registering as a Republican, and had previously supported Democrats, including Sen. Sullivan’s opponent, Democrat Mary Peltola.
The complaint alleges that a press release from Daniel J. Sullivan’s campaign contained metadata showing it was authored by Amber Lee, of Amber Lee Strategies, a consulting firm with an “exclusively progressive client roster.” Daniel J. Sullivan, the complaint states, also uses logos and a website that feature similar colors, imagery and fonts as Sen. Sullivan.
Sen. Sullivan told CNN that Democrats are “trying to cheat in this election,” and the NRSC is asking Alaska election officials to remove the competing Sullivan from the ballot.
Daniel J. Sullivan denied that he’s attempting to confuse voters and said he’s always been a moderate who has backed candidates of both parties.
“It’s my name, my grandfather’s name: Dan Sullivan. My dad’s name: Dan Sullivan,” he told CNN.
