The ink has barely dried on President Donald Trump’s order to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, but already Google Maps is reflecting the change for users located in the United States. The order was issued by the president amid a trade dispute with Canada. The company issued a statement concerning the update, stating it reflects official U.S. government naming data and is not an endorsement of the new label.
“The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for ‘Lake Ontario’ to ‘Lake America’ in the United States. Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names,” Google went on to say in a short blog post.
