Germany’s leader urges Iran to ‘come to the negotiating table now’ after Trump call

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Friday that he had a “good phone call” with President Donald Trump and that the two leaders agree on multiple issues, including that Iran “must come to the negotiating table now.”Trump and the chancellor have had a rocky relationship over the conflict in the Middle East, with Trump last month singling Merz out over his alleged support of Iran developing nuclear weapons.
The chancellor clarified in a post on Friday that he does not support Tehran developing nuclear capabilities.
“I had a good phone call with [President] Donald Trump on his way back from China,” Merz posted on X. “We agree: Iran must come to the negotiating table now. It must open the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.
“We also discussed a peaceful solution for Ukraine and coordinated our positions ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara,” he continued. “The U.S. and Germany are strong partners in a strong NATO.”
The post signals a change in the U.S.-German relationship, which got heated earlier this month when Merz blasted Trump as getting “humiliated by the Iranian leadership.” The comment spurred the U.S. to pull 5,000 troops from the European country.
