A massive gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in China’s Shanxi province Friday evening, killing at least 90 workers in what appears to be the country’s worst mining disaster in more than sixteen years.
The blast struck the Liushenyu coal mine in the city of Changzhi, where roughly 247 miners were working underground at the time. By Saturday afternoon, nine workers remained trapped below the surface as rescue crews continued searching the wreckage, Just the News reported.
