    Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson of Florida announced Friday that she will not seek a ninth term in Congress, just six days after she called reports of her retirement a “crazy rumor” and insisted she still planned to run. The 83-year-old lawmaker missed every House vote for a full month before resurfacing in Washington last week, raising fresh questions about transparency and accountability in an aging Congress.

    Wilson told the Miami Herald that she had made the decision “a while ago” but delayed the announcement out of concern that stepping aside would make her district a target for Republican-led redistricting. She confirmed the retirement to local allies over the weekend before the news became public Friday.
