FBI Director Kash Patel says Pima County’s refusal to call in federal agents for four days after Nancy Guthrie’s abduction nearly destroyed doorbell camera footage that could have cracked the case wide open.
Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, was taken from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early hours of February 1, 2026. Blood was found on her front porch. A Nest doorbell camera had captured a masked, armed figure approaching the property, but the camera was disconnected, and Guthrie did not pay for a cloud storage subscription. Without that subscription, the footage was never saved in the normal way. It sat in Google’s backend cache, ticking toward automatic deletion, while local authorities ran the investigation alone.
