The FBI on Monday announced charges against a California woman, whom authorities allege paid people to register to vote illegally.Brenda Lee Brown Armstrong, 64, faces one count of paying another person to register to vote. She has agreed to plead guilty and will formally issue that plea in the next few weeks, the DOJ said in a press release. The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Armstrong previously operated as a “petition circulator” who gathered voter signatures for ballot initiatives. She allegedly visited Los Angeles’s notorious Skid Row, where she paid homeless people to register to vote and sign her petitions.
She also allegedly allowed homeless people to use her address for the voter registration forms.
“False registrations undermine Americans’ faith in elections – even more so when payoffs are involved,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said in a statement. “This Justice Department is committed to ensuring that all U.S. elections are fair and free from illegal meddling – so that all Americans can accept the results with confidence.”
