A fire and explosion at a shipyard on New York City’s Staten Island on Friday has injured at least 16 people, New York Fire Department officials told the Associated Press, including three people who have been seriously injured.Two workers were spotted trapped in a confined space at the dock at about 3:30 p.m. Eastern and firefighters, who were attempting to rescue the workers, noted a fire burning in the basement of a metal structure at the dock, according to the outlet.
Fire crews were combatting the blaze when a major explosion rocked the site less than an hour later, Joanne Mariano with the fire department’s press office said, and emergency workers counted 16 people on site with injuries by 5 p.m. Eastern.
The injured people have been transported to local hospitals and consist of one civilian and two firefighters who suffered serious injuries, two firefighters who suffered moderate injuries, and nine firefighters and two EMS workers who suffered minor injuries.
The cause of the explosion and fire is still under investigation.
