(CN) — The European Union is extending its unprecedented sanctions regime against Russia for three more years, but it removed two Russian oligarchs from the blacklist in what critics labeled as caving in to the national interests of France and Luxembourg at the expense of Ukraine.
Late Tuesday, the EU extended sanctions on more than 3,000 Russian individuals, entities and companies, but lifted sanctions against Alisher Usmanov, a Russian-Uzbek billionaire, and Mikhail Fridman, a Russian-Israeli billionaire.
