Leaders representing 20 countries, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, signed a declaration on Monday at the UN General Assembly High-level Week in New York calling for frontier artificial intelligence to remain “under human direction, oversight and control,” according to the text of the statement released by organizers. The initiative was spearheaded by Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, officials said.
The U.S. and China, the two leading AI powers, did not sign the declaration, nor did the U.K., France or Italy, according to the list of participants. Germany, Spain and several smaller European Union states joined the initiative. Organizers stated the statement remains open for additional endorsements.
