
Many countries have constitutions that are not followed. Ethiopia is a classic example. Its constitution guarantees free expression more explicitly and expansively than the U.S. Constitution. But journalists and bloggers are routinely jailed or detained in Ethiopia, for criticizing government officials, or reporting on their actions. That’s too bad, because Ethiopia is the world’s tenth most populous country — it has 140 million inhabitants. So a lot of people are being harmed when Ethiopia denies its citizens freedom of expression.
