A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress carrying eight people crashed shortly after takeoff Monday at Edwards Air Force Base in California, and base officials said initial indications pointed to a crash that was not survivable.
The aircraft went down at 11:20 a.m. PDT while on what the Air Force described as a routine test mission. Emergency response crews rushed to the scene. By early afternoon, base officials had closed the airfield, diverted all inbound aircraft, and suspended non-commercial visitor passes “to allow the installation to focus entirely on emergency response operations.”
