Dozens of House Democrats voted Tuesday afternoon to help Republicans table an attempt to impeach President Donald Trump in hopes of showing that they are focused on solving pressing issues facing American voters. The attempt to impeach the president was led by Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green, who wanted to impeach Trump over federal immigration officials’ killing of two U.S. citizens earlier this year.
A total of 64 Democrats voted to help Republicans squash the impeachment attempt, with 47 Democrats voting present, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Jeffries claimed the impeachment attempt lacked the traditional investigative work that typically comes with the articles, including congressional hearings on the accusation, the collection and review of thousands of documents and the examination of dozens of witnesses.
“None of that serious work has been done, with the Republican majority focused solely on rubber-stamping Donald Trump’s extreme agenda,” senior House Democratic leaders said, according to Fox News. “Accordingly, we will again vote ‘present’ on the motion to table the impeachment resolution as we continue our fight to make life more affordable for everyday Americans, while committing to holding the crooks accountable using every tool available to us beginning on day one.”
Green blasted the House Democratic leaders in a statement Monday, claiming the House should not delay the vote.
“They will acknowledge that what the president is doing is impeachable, but they would have us wait,” Green said. “Well, the Constitution doesn’t have a wait clause in it. I believe that there are some Republicans and Democrats who are considering voting to protect the president. If they’re not considering protecting him, that will be the effect of what they will do when they vote to either table or they vote to send this to a committee for further investigation.”
