The US labor market has been a source of strength for much of the year: Layoffs are low, hiring plans are picking up momentum, and the unemployment rate is historically low. Yet last month’s employment numbers provided a bleak assessment of the economy, offering terrible timing for President Donald Trump and the Republicans ahead of the midterms.
