Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin this week said he could still move forward with a plan to remove U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel from airports, but that he saw no need to move forward with such a move in Newark amid protests.Newark has been at the center of numerous anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests over its Delaney Hall facility in the area. Amid the protests, Mullin floated withdrawing DHS support for airports in cities that enacted sanctuary policies.
“The mayor has been very, very cordial to work with, too,” Mullin said of Newark during a press conference. “The chief of police has been very cordial, and as long as we continue to have this partnership with local and state law enforcement, then there will be no need to do so.”
He further indicated that he was prepared to “initiate” the withdrawal of CBP personnel if it became necessary.
