DeSantis: ‘Basically zero’ chance Senate passes SAVE America Act before recess

Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., on Tuesday poured cold water on the prospect that the Senate would approve a marquis voter ID bill before leaving for the annual August recess.A number of conservative lawmakers have called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to also cancel the break outright to pass the SAVE America Act. He, however, has maintained that he does not have the votes to advance the bill. DeSantis, a former member of the House, cast doubt on any prospect of imminent passage of the bill.
“I think the chance the Senate actually passes a real SAVE Act before the August break is basically zero.  Happy to be wrong about this but I don’t think I am,” he posted on X.
The SAVE America Act has languished in the upper chamber due, in part, to the 60-vote filibuster threshold for closing debate on legislation.
Thune, for his part, has resisted public pressure, including from the White House, to either reform the filibuster or fire the Senate parliamentarian to pass the bill through the budget reconciliation process with a simple majority.
